Summer is here and we’re starting to fire up the grill in anticipation of all the backyard barbecue we’re about to enjoy. But being outdoors all day means proper hydration is key, and alcoholic drinks, soda, and juices can pack a lot of sugar and calories. Add one or all of these healthier sweet summer sips to your rotation and you’ll be refreshed and ready to go all season long!
1. DIY Flavored Water
When you need a break from standard H2O, skip the soda and choose flavored water. Avoid the store-bought stuff that’s full of chemicals and artificial colors and flavors and make your own. Try the following combinations or get creative with your favorite fruits and herbs and make your own:
- Strawberry basil
- Cucumber mint
- Orange, grapefruit, lemon, and lime
- Raspberry vanilla
- Blackberry sage
2. Homemade Lemonade
If you want something with a bit more personality than water, lemonade is the perfect summer drink. Even the homemade stuff can be pretty high in sugar, so check out this recipe for a low-sugar option that still tastes great. Try this recipe by Jamie Oliver for a simple sugar-free strawberry lemonade that you can even turn into a light summer cocktail with a splash of vodka, rum, or gin.

3. Organic Beer
Every barbecue has beer, so it’s important to be mindful of what’s in your bottle. Organic beer includes ingredients grown without chemicals or pesticides, and Butte Creek Organic Pilsner, Stone Mill Organic Pale Ale, and Peak Organic Summer Pale Ale are some great options. Check with your local store or explore a craft brewery for more options, and remember to drink in moderation.
